Key Insights

  • Higher fiber tenacity enables lightweight constructions with better durability and shape retention.
  • Naia™ Lyte expands acetate into modern tailoring, suiting, fluid draping and performance-influenced segments.
  • Premium products with distinct characteristics provide brand storytelling opportunities in a tariff-sensitive market.

Brands and their consumers are on the constant quest for textiles that look good, feel good and do good for the planet.

Eastman Chemical Company has been constantly innovating along those lines with its branded Naia™ cellulosic fiber, launched in 2017 and made from sustainably sourced wood pulp via a low-impact, closed-loop process. The company later expanded its portfolio with the circular Naia™ Renew (including 40% certified recycled materials) and the upgraded Naia™ Renew ES (60% certified recycled content). Eastman’s latest innovation, Naia™ Lyte filament yarn, allows brands to add heightened tensile strength and performance to silky, lightweight acetate fabrics.

In this interview with Hertzman Global Intelligence, Ruth Farrell, Eastman’s general manager, textiles, explains what this innovation brings to the market.

HGI: Naia™ Lyte introduces enhanced tenacity to acetate filament yarn. What does that technically enable that wasn’t possible with previous Naia™ offerings? What white space were you filling in your own portfolio and the market in general?

Ruth Farrell: Enhanced tenacity fundamentally changes how acetate can perform in lightweight applications. Traditionally, acetate has been valued for its refined aesthetics—its silky hand, beautiful luster and fluid drape. With Naia™ Lyte, we’ve increased fiber strength while preserving those signature qualities. We recognized the need to broaden acetate’s role in the lightweight luxury segment with the need to improve performance with the same aesthetic and beauty of acetate.

That added strength enables lighter-weight constructions with improved durability and shape retention. Designers can now achieve delicate, fluid silhouettes that hold up to wear and wash.

From a portfolio perspective, Naia™ Lyte expands what acetate can do. It brings exceptional strength to lightweight fabrics, opening the door to broader applications while maintaining the sustainable, luxurious foundation the Naia™ brand is known for.

HGI: How do you see Naia™ Lyte shifting acetate’s role in the market?

RF: We see Naia™ Lyte growing acetate’s role rather than redefining it. Acetate has long been associated with premium fashion, refined aesthetics and fluid drape. Naia™ Lyte builds on that foundation by introducing enhanced strength. That added strength expands creative freedom and gives designers greater confidence to push boundaries, experiment with innovative constructions and explore more expressive, fashion-forward designs. Naia™ Lyte opens the door to more innovative and out-of-the-box thinking.

This also creates an opportunity for acetate to participate more meaningfully in performance-influenced and technical segments, particularly where brands are looking for a balance between aesthetics and functionality. It doesn’t move acetate away from premium fashion, it broadens its relevance.

HGI: Is this product at another price premium?

RF: Naia™ Lyte reflects the added value of enhanced performance, but our focus is not simply on price positioning, it’s on value creation. The increased tenacity enables broader applications and longer-lasting garments, which supports durability and wearability at the fabric level.

We view Naia™ Lyte as an investment in expanded design flexibility and performance. As adoption grows and scale increases, we expect it to remain competitive within the premium luxury segment while delivering differentiated performance.

HGI: What feedback have you received from mills and brands since unveiling Naia™ Lyte at Première Vision Paris earlier this year, and where are you seeing the strongest early adoption?

RF: The feedback has been very encouraging. Many expressed excitement about being able to develop lighter fabrics with the same softness and ease-of care as Naia™without compromising durability.

Many also see Naia™ Lyte as an opportunity to replace traditional luxury fibers with a solution that enhances both performance and sustainability, while delivering premium features at an accessible price point.

We see particularly strong interest from fashion-forward brands exploring modern tailoring, fluid suiting, lightweight outerwear and technical-influenced fashion segments. We’ve already begun commercial sales globally, with the first orders shipped out earlier this year.

HGI: How does the strategic partnership with Huafon Chemical accelerate innovation and commercialization for Naia™ Lyte, and what does it signal about your broader sourcing and regional strategy?

RF: Our partnership with Huafon Chemical strengthens both speed and scale. By combining Eastman’s expertise in cellulosic materials with Huafon’s manufacturing and development capabilities, we’re able to accelerate commercialization while maintaining quality standards.

Strategically, it reflects our commitment to building resilient, regionally aligned supply chains that can support global brands and further our mission “to make sustainable textiles accessible to all.” As the industry navigates geopolitical shifts and tariff pressures, having strong regional partnerships allows us to respond more quickly to market needs and provide greater sourcing flexibility.

Ultimately, the partnership signals that innovation for us is not just about fiber performance, it’s about delivering that performance sustainably, reliably and efficiently at scale.

HGI: With brands under pressure to deliver both performance and sustainability, how does Naia™ Lyte fit address the need for premium products that can be accompanied by storytelling and ease the tariff burden?

RF: Naia™ Lyte addresses that balance. It delivers enhanced durability in lightweight constructions, helping support longer-lasting garments. At the same time, it builds on the established sustainability foundation of the Naia™ portfolio, giving brands a material story that is both credible and differentiated.

In a tariff-sensitive environment, materials that can serve multiple applications while maintaining premium positioning become even more valuable. Naia™ Lyte enables designers to create refined, high-performance pieces that carry both technical merit and emotional appeal. This is increasingly important for brands looking to justify premium products through authentic storytelling.

It’s not just about adding strength, it’s about adding relevance in today’s market conditions.
