NAGNATA Becomes a Certified B Corporation™ as the Independent Australian Brand Enters its Next Global Chapter

Achieving an overall B Impact Score of 87.8, the milestone recognizes NAGNATA’s longstanding commitment to building a responsible business  as the brand expands its international presence.

NAGNATA, the independent Australian fashion brand founded by Laura May Gibbs and built with her sister Hannah Stenmark, announces today that it has become a Certified B Corporation™, marking a defining milestone for the company as it enters its next chapter of global growth.

Following a multi-year certification journey, NAGNATA achieved an overall B Impact Score of 87.8, with its highest category scores in Environment (29) and Workers (21.5), alongside Community (17.1), and Governance (16.4). The certification recognizes years of work to build NAGNATA around the same values of intention and  innovation that have shaped its clothing from the beginning.  For NAGNATA, becoming a B Corp gives independent recognition to principles the brand has spent years embedding across its business: What you put on your skin matters. How it gets there matters too.

The idea builds on a philosophy that has shaped NAGNATA since Laura May began developing the brand’s first proprietary yarns and experimenting with natural fibres and seamless knitting techniques. It became the foundation of NAGNATA’s approach to movement wear: clothing designed for the body in motion and at rest, grounded in natural fibres and intentional design.

Today, those principles reach across the entire company.

NAGNATA began its formal B Corp assessment in 2023, building on work that had already been underway across the business. Over several years, the company strengthened its supply chain, workplace policies and governance to embed greater social and environmental accountability.  The result is a certification years in the making and a framework designed to support NAGNATA’s next stage of growth.

“From the beginning, our vision for NAGNATA has been to explore a new blueprint for fashion,” says Laura May Gibbs, Founder and Creative Director of NAGNATA. “Becoming a B Corp is a really meaningful milestone for us because it recognizes the work we’ve been doing across the whole business, from the fibers and textiles we develop to the people, partnerships and systems behind them. We know there is always more work to do, and as NAGNATA grows globally, I want us to keep evolving with intention, pushing what is possible with natural fibers and using our platform to create a positive impact.”

Materials have been central to NAGNATA’s design philosophy since its inception, and the company’s Environment score of 29 represents its highest individual category score within the B Impact Assessment. NAGNATA’s material practices and associated Impact Business Models were significant contributors to the assessment.

Long before NAGNATA became a B Corp, Laura May’s work with WomenWeave in India and textile manufacturers across Hong Kong and China laid the foundation for the brand’s innovative seamless Merino wool knitwear, developed with early support from Woolmark. That material-first approach continues to guide the brand today. In FY25–26, 72.5% of NAGNATA’s raw materials produced were natural fibres. Of all cotton used during the period, 91.48% was certified organic, while 80.43% of wool was Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) certified. Among the synthetic fibres used across the collection, 74.17% were Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certified. Since completing the assessment period, the brand has continued to increase its use of certified materials across its collections.

The People and Systems Behind NAGNATA

NAGNATA’s Workers score of 21.5 represents its second-highest category score, reflecting work across employee policies, benefits and workplace practices. The company rewrote its employee handbook, introduced and formalized new workplace policies and expanded wellness benefits. NAGNATA’s permanent workforce is currently 80% women.

The company also achieved 17.1 for Community and 16.4 for Governance, reflecting the wider systems and relationships that have become part of NAGNATA’s approach to responsible business.

Across its supply chain, NAGNATA prioritizes manufacturing partners with established social-compliance systems. The majority of its manufacturing partners undergo BSCI audits. The brand also considers supplier location, favoring partners close to its primary 3PL wherever possible to minimize freight distances and associated emissions. NAGNATA’s broader community and governance commitments include partnerships with WomenWeave and The Returning, completion of Stage 1 of its Reconciliation Action Plan, and an amended constitution that embeds social and environmental responsibility into the business.

NAGNATA’s B Corp Certification reflects a journey that began years before the company formally submitted its assessment. When Helena Phan joined NAGNATA four years ago, B Corp Certification was already an ambition for the company. The years that followed were spent building the systems needed to support that goal, including a significant evolution of the supply chain and the development of new policies based around the B Corp framework. NAGNATA began the formal assessment in 2023 and received confirmation of its certification in June 2026.

The certification marks a significant period of growth for NAGNATA as the independent, family-built Australian brand expands its movement wear offering and global presence, with Laura May and Hannah continuing to lead its creative evolution and B Corp providing a framework to strengthen the values on which it was founded.

What Comes Next

NAGNATA is already building on the progress represented by its certification. The next phase of its impact strategy will focus on natural-fibre innovation, increasing certified materials, reducing reliance on virgin synthetics, expanding supply-chain transparency, circularity and developing new alternatives to conventional fashion materials.

Beginning in FY26–27, NAGNATA’s company-operated facilities (including its Byron Bay headquarters and its Byron Bay and Sydney retail locations) are powered by GreenPower. The company is also developing a circularity initiative and expanding its Return to Earth concept into additional product categories. Future material development includes continued research into seaweed-based fibres, bio-based synthetics and bio-leathers, alongside a growing focus on garments constructed entirely from natural fibres. NAGNATA is also introducing details including plant-based buttons as it explores opportunities to reduce conventional plastics throughout its products.

The company will begin developing its first Impact Report in 2026, creating a public framework for communicating progress across materials, supply chain, operations, people and community.

B Corp Certification establishes a new benchmark within that work, one NAGNATA will continue building upon as the company evolves.

For NAGNATA, B Corp marks the recognition of a journey years in the making and a foundation for what comes next as the independent Australian brand takes its next steps on the global stage.
