As sustainability becomes an increasing priority for brands, retailers and consumers, regenerative agriculture is picking up speed as a powerful solution. These farming practices focus on soil health and create a more environmentally responsible cotton supply chain, and the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol is leading an industry transformation through education and action.
Simply put, regenerative agriculture thinks long-term versus short-term. It focuses on cultivating cotton via sustainable methods that actively improve the health of the land — both for next season’s crops and next-generation growers.
The Trust Protocol’s new Field Partner Program is helping scale regenerative practices of cover cropping, conservation tillage, nutrient management and more, all while providing both the transparency and verification that supply chains demand. The result is healthier soil, improved water efficiency, increased biodiversity and stronger farm resilience.
“The benefits are clear and powerful,” said Marjory Walker, co-director of the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol in conversation with Hertzman Global Intelligence director of content Lauren Parker. “If you remember the Dust Bowl era from your history books, that was when farmers began to understand that without healthy top soil, you can’t grow crops. These practices have evolved over time to protect soil, conserve water and prevent erosion to improve long-term productivity. It’s a matter of environmental and economic sustainability.”
The Trust Protocol’s Field Partner Program, created in 2025, develops a domestic pipeline for trusted, science-based regenerative cotton at scale, especially important as geopolitical and labor concerns put pressure on foreign cotton.
Currently, the Trust Protocol encompasses more than 2.5 million acres of farmland, with cotton grown coast-to-coast across 17 states. This nationwide footprint provides brands with a reliable domestic source of sustainably grown cotton while simplifying traceability throughout the supply chain.
“If you want a foolproof supply chain, start it with U.S. cotton,” said Walker.

The initiative combines data-driven verification with rigorous standards, enabling brands and retailers to confidently source cotton that meets sustainability goals and evolving regulatory requirements.
For growers, the benefits extend beyond environmental stewardship. Participation increases recognition for their efforts, enhances market access and helps position their operations to meet growing demand for sustainably sourced cotton. It also creates direct connections with brands seeking verified regenerative fiber.
However, scaling regenerative agriculture is not without challenges. Purchasing cover crop seed, adding new management techniques and verifying claims can all add costs and responsibility to growers.
Walker believes the key to overcoming these barriers lies in creating clear, science-based systems that recognize and reward farmers. Education is also critical, and the Trust Protocol’s outreach programs help farmers better understand how to apply regenerative principles to their respective region.
“The Field Partner Program provides a rigorous framework that makes regenerative cotton easier to operationalize at scale,” Walker said. “It’s all about helping these growers understand what the practices are and how to adapt them to their specific farming operation.”
The Trust Protocol verifies use of these practices through remote sensing technologies, satellite imagery and field-level assessments. Their traceability platform also provides supply chain visibility to finished product.
“The complexity of environmental claims can sometimes lead to misunderstanding, which is why our growers focus on clear, data-driven, verifiable impact,” said Walker.
The Trust Protocol also delivers what it calls a “Verified Carbon Advantage” — offering verified greenhouse gas reductions and net carbon removal metrics for U.S. cotton. The result is a highly credible carbon accounting framework that helps brands reduce Scope 3 emissions and substantiate sustainability claims.
As demand for verified regenerative materials continues to grow, programs like the U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol’s Field Partner Program demonstrate how collaboration between growers, brands and supply chain partners can drive meaningful progress. By combining decades-old farming practices with modern verification technology, the initiative is helping build a more sustainable future for cotton — one field at a time.
